Now with all the trying and difficult times that we found ourselves in due to the pandemic. Job loss, separation from our loved ones, mental health issues and many more. We witnessed many people working from home. Now this is a dream for many employees, regardless of its challenges sometimes such as noise from kids or simply temptation. Of course who would not want to work at the comfort of their home? Squashing that Huge Teddy bear when you are struggling with that report, drinking from your favorite coffee mug with your kids drawing or from your partner or simply just looking right outside your garden.

Such a dream, right! It is not always rosy as it seems because more than ever remote employees are under pressure to prove their reliability to their boss. Are you meeting deadlines? Are you productive enough?  Are you not abusing ‘’working hours? Are you not engaging in activities that you would not slightly do under office supervision?  It is quite a lot, right. You would not want to be that remote employee. Here is a top to do list to wow your boss.

1. WORKING YOUR FULL HOURS

Working from home comes with flexibility and with no notice of your hours can affect your productivity. Now one knows that one person’s lack affects the whole team. If you are not present when needed to be, that will definitely affect your colleagues causing lack of trust from your boss and colleagues. Be available and reliable. Go that extra mile, put in that extra hour when needed to. This will indicate to your boss not only are you reliable but a backbone when they need one. Possible promotion there!

2. BE WHERE YOU SUPPOSED TO BE AT THAT TIME. LOGGED IN!

As funny as it is, it’s quite costly when not followed. Some of my friends with the ‘’new normal’’ remote work have some of the funniest stories. One would relate how they went to the mall where they were supposed to be logged in on their computer. They then create an excuse how the system was down and not. That time they were either on a shopping spree or just quenching drinks for that yesterday’s hangover. This never works if you want to ‘’WOW’’ your boss. Excuses imply you are not reliable and self-disciplined and can encourage financial loss for the company. Logged in when you are supposed to show reliability.

3. PAYING ATTENTION DURING VIDEO CALLS

Of course remote works are not the same, however one thing about them mostly involves video calling. Being distracted and non-attentive during a video call either with your boss or client is not a great sign that you regard your work as a priority. Remember that as much as there are distractions in our comfort homes, we can’t attend to them while on video call. Be professional to prove you are worth it to handle bigger projects. If you can’t discipline yourself then you won’t be chosen for bigger projects.

4.SENDING UPDATES

Always keep your boss up to date. Don’t go AWOL and having your boss be a tracking device after you. It is not a professional move. You applied for the post promising to be the best. Besides even if you were sent to work home voluntary, you would need to proof you are worth being independent and honest. Avoid being nagging though bosses are people too and need their time. Know the time to send and not to.

5.BE PROACTIVE

You were employed because you have potential. Use it and achieve more. Think. Pitch ideas that will bring solutions. Raise something fresh. Don’t be afraid to slide that email full of fresh ideas, that can be your big break. Remember CEOs started from the ground too. Take chances and that will improve your boss that you don’t need an ‘’office environment’’ to be creative.

Working from home is Fun regardless of its challenges. However, it needs discipline to be in good books with your boss or even bag those promotions. These to Do List are just some of ways to achieve that promotion.
